Sustainable demiwater factory of BASF Antwerp and Evides Industriewater officially in use
Jan Remeysen, Chairman of the Board of Directors of BASF Antwerp and Annette Ottolini, General Manager of Evides Waterbedrijf officially opened the new, sustainable demiwater factory on the BASF Antwerp site today, marking the start of the commissioning.
Reuse of water and heat
Demineralized water is used for applications that require the highest quality water, for example for steam production.
Jan Remeysen: "As a sustainable player, BASF wants to deal responsibly with the use of water in its industrial applications. For the construction of this new demineralised water installation, we have completed a nice innovative project together with Evides. With this realization we are taking another big step. in our sustainable water management."
Annette Ottolini: "We are pleased with the good, strategic cooperation with BASF. BASF and Evides have the same vision on sustainability and this is reflected in the new demiwater factory. I am proud that, despite corona, the new factory within the planned and realized in-house."
Collaboration
In September 2020, BASF and Evides Industriewater (EIW) signed a new, comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement. This agreement includes the design and construction of a new demineralized water factory and the supply of the correct quantities of feed water. The factory replaces the current BASF installation. This makes EIW the water partner for BASF Antwerp and takes care of the entire production and supply of demi water.
Evides designed, built and commissioned the new factory in close consultation with BASF Antwerp. It was jointly agreed how the new demiwater factory could be optimally integrated into the complex heat and production unit of the BASF site in Antwerp. The starting points for this were, among other things, sustainable water management and energy consumption, whereby opportunities for further optimization are being looked at in close collaboration.
Reuse of water and heat
BASF Antwerp will continue to apply sustainable water management with the commissioning of this factory. For example, BASF already started in 1995 with the reuse of suitable internal water flows as feed water for demi-production'. Evides Industriewater also strives for reuse and sustainable water and energy use, which is reflected in the new installation:
- Condensate from steam from a specific installation is reused as feed water in the demi-process;
- the entire demi water production runs on green electricity;
- residual heat is used to heat feed water
- fewer chemicals are needed for purification into demineralised water.
The installation is also suitable for using other water sources in the future. In addition, we are currently exploring various possibilities to realize more reuse, so that we can achieve a further reduction of the water footprint.
With this new and sustainable demi water factory, the water supply is guaranteed for the coming decades and BASF and EIW are taking a major step in achieving their sustainability goals.
