Question

What was the client’s question

In 2014 the question was raised: “What can we do with the heat arising from the production at Zeeland Refinery and that is now being lost?” That is the residual heat.

Solution

What we have done for Sloewarmte
Sloewarmte B.V. was founded in response to this question. Sloewarmte is an initiative of Evides Industrial water, Zeeland Seaports and Martens Cleaning. It aims to reuse heat deriving from the Zeeland Refinery.

We have realised the generation of residual heat and are responsible for the exploitation and the maintenance of the pipeline and installations. We are also responsible for the supply of the residual heat at the right temperature, to the industry.

Technology

Residual heat (energy) of Zeeland Refinery is transported to the water in the closed circuit of Sloewarmte via a heat exchanger. The temperature of the water increased to 140 oC. The heated water is subsequently transported to two clients, via a pipe. This way, the residual heat is used optimally.

Utilising residual heat
Martens uses the energy to purify used oil of vessels and make it suitable for reuse.
COVRA uses the energy for climate control in its offices.

Result

What was the result
The residual heat is now reused via a circuit pipe of 2.5 kilometres that runs partly underground and partly above ground. The generation of residual heat results in an annual energy saving equalling the consumption by 1,500 households. And a reduction of the CO2-emissions by some 4,300 tonnes per year.

In addition, the generation of residual heat provides energy savings of approx. 2.4 million Nm³/j. As a result of this savings, Martens and COVRA can substantially reduce their purchase of fossil fuel.
