Evides Industriewater has started construction of a new demineralized water plant at the BASF site in Antwerp. This fulfills the recently signed cooperation agreement.
Thanks to its smart design, this installation contributes to the sustainability objectives and security of supply that are essential for BASF.
The design of the demineralized water plant focused on optimizing the process by reusing various water streams from production and utilizing residual heat from condensate. This results in more efficient water use and lower energy and chemical consumption.
This choice of technology is supported by the research project IMPROVED, with partners including BASF, Ghent University, Zeeland University of Applied Sciences, and Evides Industriewater.
600 Foundation piles
Currently, two pile drivers are driving the more than 600 foundation piles. This is expected to continue until Christmas 2020. After that, construction of the hall and the demineralized water installation will begin. 2021 will be dedicated to further realization, and the first water will be purified in the spring of 2022.
Sustainability
As BASF's second-largest site, the Antwerp site has been working intensively for several years on the BASF Group's ambition to implement sustainable water management at its large 'Verbundsites' and at all sites in water-stressed areas by 2025 at the latest. To this end, BASF relies on the 'European Water Stewardship' standard, which is based on four principles: using sustainable water extraction, ensuring good water quality, preserving protected areas, and continuously improving processes. In this context, research is being conducted into, among other things, a further reduction of the water footprint through the reuse of treated wastewater.
Together with Evides Industriewater BASF Antwerp puts these principles into practice. This creates sustainable value that also contributes to Evides ambition to be energy and climate neutral by 2025.
